Octane XT MWD: 219 Runs Above 320°F

Octane XT MWD Reports 96.3% Success Above 320°F

Pro Directional’s Octane XT measurement while drilling (MWD) platform recorded a 96.3% success rate across 219 runs sustained above 320°F. These field results provide an operating record for teams evaluating MWD equipment for high-temperature intervals.

Performance at a Glance

  • MWD platform: Octane XT
  • Temperature exposure: Sustained above 320°F
  • Reported runs: 219
  • Reported success rate: 96.3%

Field Performance Under Sustained Heat

For this performance highlight, sustained temperature exposure is a key part of the story. The reported results cover 219 runs above 320°F, providing context beyond a tool’s stated temperature rating.

The 96.3% reported success rate describes performance within that group of runs. Reviewing the underlying run reports, exposure durations, and success criteria can help operators assess how those results relate to their planned drilling conditions.

Planning the Next High-Temperature Interval

For operators planning high-temperature or high-pressure, high-temperature intervals, these results offer a starting point for a technical discussion about MWD selection. Temperature history, expected run duration, pressure, and vibration conditions should be considered when reviewing the application.

Pro Directional’s team can discuss the Octane XT field data and the requirements of your upcoming program.

Wolfcamp A: 8,450 Feet Drilled in 24 Hours

8,450 Feet in 24 Hours in Wolfcamp A

Pro Directional drilled 8,450 feet in 24 hours in the Wolfcamp A formation in Midland County. The operation used a conventional bottomhole assembly (BHA) with a ProPower 6/7 8.4 motor in a 7-7/8-inch hole.

The result was achieved without a rotary steerable system (RSS), pairing a conventional motor configuration with field execution and a drilling plan built around the operator’s authorization for expenditure (AFE).

Performance at a Glance

  • Formation: Wolfcamp A
  • Location: Midland County
  • Footage drilled: 8,450 feet in 24 hours
  • Hole size: 7-7/8 inches
  • Motor configuration: 6/7 8.4
  • BHA: Conventional, without RSS

Conventional BHA, Measurable Results

For this application, the team selected a conventional BHA and ProPower motor to support the planned drilling program. The 24-hour footage provides a clear measure of what that equipment and crew delivered in the field.

Motor selection, experienced personnel, and a plan aligned with the operator’s requirements were central to the approach. The outcome was 8,450 feet drilled within a single day.

Eagle Ford VCL: 13,501 Feet Drilled in One Run

One BHA Through Vertical, Curve, and Lateral

Pro Directional drilled 13,501 feet in a single run for a major operator in La Salle County, Eagle Ford. One bottomhole assembly (BHA) completed the vertical, curve, and lateral (VCL) section to total depth (TD) without a trip.

The run paired a 7.25-inch 5/6 motor with 9.7 stages with an 8.75-inch hole size, delivering a composite rate of penetration (ROP) of 280 ft/hr.

Run Results

  • Total footage: 13,501 feet
  • Composite ROP: 280 ft/hr
  • Rotary ROP: 329 ft/hr
  • Slide percentage: 8.1% across the entire run
  • Motor stalls: Zero
  • Maximum recorded temperature: 311°F
  • Bit condition at TD: Reported with no wear

Complete VCL Section Without a Trip

Completing the vertical, curve, and lateral sections with one BHA meant the assembly stayed in hole through the full run to TD. The motor recorded zero stalls, with sliding accounting for 8.1% of the run.

At TD, the bit was pulled out of hole and reported to have no wear. Together with the footage and ROP figures, that observation adds detail to the run’s performance record.

Performance at 311°F

The maximum recorded temperature reached 311°F during the run. This operating condition provides context for evaluating the motor specification, BHA configuration, and temperature management behind the result.

For this Eagle Ford application, the outcome was clear: 13,501 feet, one BHA, and a complete VCL section drilled to TD without a trip.

performance highlight 5 well with 97000+ ft drilled

ProPower Performance: 97,000+ Feet Drilled Across 5 Wells

ProPower Performance Across Five Wells: 97,000+ Feet Drilled

Five wells. More than 97,000 feet drilled. An average production rate of penetration of 432 ft/hr.

Pro Directional deployed its ProPower motor platform across a five-well program, drilling five production sections with vertical, curve, and lateral rotary steerable system (RSS) bottomhole assemblies (BHAs). Each well used one ProPower motor.

One Motor Per Well

On one well, the crew pulled out of hole for a bit change, then re-ran the same motor to continue drilling. That well maintained the program’s one-motor-per-well approach despite the additional trip.

The motor re-run provides a practical example of equipment performance beyond the headline footage and drilling rate.

Performance Results

The five-well program recorded:

  • 5 production sections drilled
  • 97,000+ total feet drilled
  • 432 ft/hr average production rate of penetration
  • 100% ProPower motor platform
  • 0 reported nonproductive time (NPT)

Total footage reflects the overall drilling program, while the average production ROP measures drilling speed in the production sections.

Execution Across the Program

With one motor per well and a documented re-run following a bit change, this program highlights ProPower performance across vertical, curve, and lateral RSS applications.

These results reflect the work of the field crews and the collaboration behind each well. Thank you to our customers and teams for their trust and execution throughout the program.
